Dr. OMAR GATERA

Principal Investigator
OMAR GATERA received the B.Sc. degree in electronics and communication systems and the M.Sc. degree in information and communication technology (ICT) from the University of Rwanda, in 2006 and 2008, respectively. He also received the Ph.D. degree in Telecommunication engineering from Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Istanbul, Turkey in 2017. From 2008 to 2020, he was working for the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) where he was involved in standards development and conformity assessment activities for electrotechnical sector. From November 2020, he is working for the University of Rwanda, College of Science and Technology (UR-CST) as lecturer in the department of electrical and electronics engineering and Head of PhD studies and research in the African Center of Excellence in Internet of Things (ACEIoT). His research interests include wireless communication systems, Internet of things and artificial intelligence.

Prof. DAMIEN HANYURWIMFURA

Prof Damien Hanyurwimfura is a Full Professor and the Acting Director of the African Center of Excellence in Internet of Things (ACEIoT), College of Science and Technology, University of Rwanda. He received his Bachelor degree of Engineering in Computer Engineering and Information Technology from University of Rwanda (Former KIST) in 2005. He obtained his Master degree of Engineering in Computer Science and Technology and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Technology from Hunan University, China in 2010 and 2015 respectively. He served as the Head of PhD studies and Research in the ACEIoT for 4 years He has published and co-authored more than 30 research papers in leading international journals and conferences. He has participated in many AI workshops as a speaker. He has secured 4 research grants at national and regional levels as Principal Investigator or Co-PI. His research interests covers most aspect of data mining, machine learning, Computer security, watermarking, Internet of Things, hate speech detection and recommender systems. Dr. ATHANASE NDUWUMUREMYI

Since 2021, Dr. Athanase Nduwumuremyi (PhD) is a senior research fellow and Roots and Tubers Program coordinator at Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resource Development Board (RAB). He holds a PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics from University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa; MSc in Agricultural Sciences from Kenyatta University, Kenya; and BSc in Crop Sciences and Advanced Diploma in Crop Production from University of Rwanda. He successfully coordinated many projects and is currently leading a couple of projects including Open Forum of Agriculture Biotechnology (OFAB) Rwanda Chapter, and Virus Resistant Cassava for Africa (VIRCA). He published over 20 peer reviewed scientific papers, and he is supervising MSc and PhD students from various universities. He is energetic and ambitious for R4D to improve farmers’ livelihoods in Rwanda and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)

Dr. CLAIRE D'ANDRÉ HIRWA

Dr Claire d'André Hirwa is a Senior Research Fellow in animal breeding, genetics and reproduction at Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB). She did her postgraduate (MSc and PhD in Animal breeding, genetics and reproduction from South China Agricultural University, in China. Dr Claire d'André Hirwa is a passionate animal scientist, current a senior research fellow in monogastrics programme at Rwanda Agricultural and Animal Resources Development Board. She helps others to succeed, science mentor. Dr Claire d’André Hirwa is highly motivated and result driven, with almost 10 years in research and collaborative research engagement focused on optimizing agricultural productivity through performance improvement of animal genetics resources (cattle, pigs and chicken). Dr Claire d'André Hirwa has been working on animal breeding, especially reproductive technologies (Multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET), Artificial insemination (AI), Conservation and genetic characterization of indigenous cattle and chicken. She has experience in management of research projects. She contributed to the development of animal recording cards at RAB and the excel sheet to be used in data entry. She has published over 30 refereed journal articles; she produced more than 22 extension materials (Posters, Training materials, Curriculum, Farmer Field School (FFS) modules, guidelines). She is a member of an editorial board of international conference of applied and pure sciences (ICAPS), 2021 conf.kln.ac.lk/icaps/index.php/committees/editorial-board. Dr Claire d'André Hirwa contributed to the capacity building of PhDs, MSc and undergraduate students at University of Rwanda and regional universities (Egerton) by supervising and teaching. She participated as principal or co-principal investigator of over 6 competitive research projects funded by regional and international donors. She has also laid many development projects at RAB. She is a member of different scientific groups and she has more than 4 honors. Her current research interest is on applied research such as animal genetic characterization and genetic improvement (Chicken, pigs, cattle, rabbits).

Mr. VIATEUR NGABONZIMA

A staff of Kinazi Cassava Plant. He will contribute to the survey on cassava value chain, setting up the specification for developing the device, testing the device, analysis of data, validation of the device, research findings publication, capacity building in cassava value chain and other related activities in the project.

Ass.Prof. ANNA BERLIN

a Researcher at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU); expert in plant health, epidemiology, and crop value chain. she will mainly contribute in Capacity Building of the end users of the System.
